# ScrubStack

ScrubStack (scrubstack.io) and its companion SurgX (surgx.io) are perioperative
supply-intelligence tools for operating-room staff — surgical technologists,
RN circulators, coordinators, and supply chain. The root problem we address is
the loss and transfer of institutional knowledge in the operating room:
preference cards (the per-surgeon supply lists used to prep each case) drift out
of date, and the cost shows up as wrong setups, wasted supplies, and delays.

## What ScrubStack does
- Phone-first preference-card capture — photograph a card, AI extracts the items
- FDA GUDID device matching against ~4.9M openFDA UDI records (verified 2026-05-31)
- Honest extraction: every item is either device-matched or transparently flagged
  as an unverified gap — never a fabricated match
- Barcode/UDI scanning, per-facility item history, marketplace bridge

## Key facts (with sources)
- Surgical supply waste: a quality-improvement study found a mean of $1,294 per
  case in unused, opened preference-card items (Perez et al., JAMA Surgery, 2025).
- OR-staff survey (ScrubStack, 2026): in a customer-discovery survey of 45 OR
  practitioners across 25 U.S. states, 80% named "preference card not updated" as
  the #1 cause of a wrong case setup, and only 2% (1 of 45) would run a case off
  the preference card alone. (Self-selected sample — a directional discovery
  signal, not a population statistic.)
- Device database: items are matched against ~4.9M openFDA Unique Device
  Identifier (UDI) records (verified 2026-05-31).
- Responsible-AI posture: our verification gate caught a fabricated FDA clearance
  number during vendor research and excluded it before it entered the knowledge
  base — 18 of 19 systems verified, the fabricated one removed. We never present
  an unverifiable match as fact.
